Coleco's Electronic Quarterback, released in 1978, was one of the earliest handheld electronic football games and a direct competitor to Mattel's Football. It was a massive commercial success and helped establish Coleco as a major player in the electronic gaming market — paving the way for the company to develop the ColecoVision console just four years later.
